Boulder Splitting

What is Boulder Splitting?

Boulder splitting is a service that we provide that includes a few techniques and the use of special equipment to detonate or crack rock. This is to reduce the size and weight of boulders making backhoe removal manageable.

Not all boulders are splittable.

Some ledges are too thick.

We will need to come out and see the size type and location of your rock in person.

We may use 1 of 2 splitting methods:

  •  EZ Break - Microblasting - it is the drilling and inserting of small explosive charges. (using pneumatic detonation)
  •  Expanding Chemical Mortar - Ecobust a chemical that drys and expands to create powerful pressure inside of the rock.

The appropriate technique will depends on rock and customer.

Note: The most difficult part of Boulder Splitting is drilling rock.

Next: Is keeping the Micro Blaster detonators clean and well oiled after each use.

SDS Rotary Hammer Drill is a powerful hand tools that must be held properly.

Drilling into rock without experience and technique can cause powerful kick backs.

Carbide SDS bits get burned relatively quickly due to the excessive heat build up from friction of rock drilling.

Water must continually be used to cool down the bits and dust control.

Masks must always be worn to prevent rock dust inhalation.

Removing un-detonated charges can be dangerous if it's not done properly.

Proper precautions must always be taken.  This process is legal however your business must be registered.

Experience and safety is key.

What is Microblasting?

Microblasting

Advantages

Fast Split Completion (only one day)

Smaller diameter holes means faster drilling.

Multiple detonations per day

Detonation can dislodge and make it easier to grab remnants

Cons

Louder  - sounds like a firework or gun shot.

Rocks must be covered with blankets to prevent rock debris

Numerous charges and Hammer bits get used up.

All rock drilling is very hard on bits.

What is Expanding Mortar?

Ecobust Chemical

Advantages

Quiet and safe method to Split Rock and Thick Cement

No flying debris.

No charges to pay for.

Cons

Slow - Depending on weather and temperature it can

take 5 days to split once applied.

Because its slow you cant see where the split will occur

until fully expanded.  Split will leave rock in similar position.

Carbide SDS Hammer bits must be larger diameter

1" & 1..4" so they can be an expense to replace.

All rock drilling is hard on bits.
